Airtable MCP and ChatGPT: what AI can change in your bases
Last updated:
Airtable now works inside ChatGPT, Claude and other AI tools, through its ChatGPT app and its own MCP server. The assistant can read your records, and it can also write them, on every plan. It's genuinely useful, and it's also the first time something other than a person can change hundreds of records from a single sentence. Here is what it can do, how to keep it in check and how to keep your data safe.
What are Airtable for ChatGPT and Airtable MCP?
- Airtable for ChatGPT, an app launched in December 2025, lets ChatGPT reference your Airtable data and make quick updates without leaving the chat. It's available on every plan of both products, it needs edit access or higher in the bases you connect, and you choose which bases or workspaces it can reach.
- Airtable MCP is Airtable's server for the Model Context Protocol, a standard way for AI tools to use another app. According to Airtable's fall release, it's open to all customers and works with Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Amazon Quick and Cursor, and the connected tools "can read and write records, submit forms, build automations and interfaces".
Community MCP servers for Airtable exist too, usually connected with a personal access token. Some of them include tools that delete records, so check which server you're connecting and which scopes its token has.
What can go wrong?
An assistant that can write records can also overwrite them. A loose instruction, such as "clean up the status field" or "merge these duplicates", can change far more records than you meant, with your own access: if you can edit a base, so can the assistant.
Airtable's own safety nets help, but each one has a limit:
- the trash brings back deleted records, fields and tables for 7 days, not values that were overwritten
- record history shows the old values, one record at a time
- base snapshots restore a whole base into a new base, with a new ID that your integrations and automations don't know
How do you keep it in check?
If you're an admin, Airtable lets you turn MCP on or off for the whole organization, approve which AI tools people can use and limit each tool to specific bases. Admins also get audit logs that trace actions back to the AI tool and the person who connected it.
How do you use it safely?
- Connect only the bases the assistant needs, not the whole workspace.
- Start with questions that only read: summaries, searches, lists.
- Before a change, ask the assistant to list the records and the new values, and confirm them yourself.
- Try a change on a few records first, then check them in Airtable.
- Keep a copy of your data outside Airtable, from before the AI touched it.
The last point is the one that saves you when the others fail. Airtable Backup, which we build, takes a snapshot of your records, attachments, comments and linked records every day, so you can compare today with yesterday and recover the values an assistant overwrote. If you only want a one-off copy, here is how to export your Airtable data.
